TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joints, the hinges that connect your jaw to your skull. These joints are used constantly — for talking, chewing, yawning, even facial expressions. When they become irritated or out of balance, it can lead to TMJ disorder (TMD).

Common symptoms of TMJ include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth

  • Limited movement or locking of the jaw

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Earaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or a feeling of fullness

  • Neck and shoulder tension related to jaw strain

  • Teeth grinding or clenching, often during sleep (bruxism)

TMJ can be triggered by stress, teeth grinding, misalignment, arthritis, or injury — and for many patients, symptoms can become chronic.
